Hollytrees Museum

« Other Public Destinations

In this vibrant museum, enjoy 300 years of history through hands-on exhibits and displays with fun and humour in mind, making it an ideal venue for families.  One room is dedicated to childhood and is like a large playroom, with snakes and ladders incorporated into the floor, a crawling tunnel, `time out' area for toddlers and exciting displays celebrating Colchesters famous nursery rhymes, Old King Cole and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
Look out for the dolls house, it's a model of Hollytrees House.  Discover what family life was like for the rich and the poor people. Hear the stories of those who lived and worked in Hollytrees, a beautiful Georgian town house built in 1718.  Meet Isaac Calthrop, a sedan chair carrier, who will fill you in on all the local goings on.  Listen to Charles Gray Round and his family.  Imagine what life was like for Mary Last, their servant.
During the year, particularly during school holiday times, Hollytrees Museum runs a range of activity and participation sessions which include: art & craft skills, storytelling, stop motion animation skills, quiz trails and live interpretation, validated as Children's University Learning Destinations.
If you are visiting Hollytrees Museum, but not participating in any of the holiday activities, present your Passport to Learning as you leave and you will receive a token.  If you take this to your school, your school can award 30 minutes of Learning for your Passport.
